Nice, France
Tues 23 May 2023 - Thurs 25 May 2023. Part one of a longer trip to the french riviera.

Night before our flight out

I noticed that I’d spelled Kat’s name wrong on our plane tickets… oops… What a great start!

Luckily, our airline had a policy of allowing changes to the name of the person flying. You can change the first name, or the last name, but not both. If you want to change both, you need to pay extra. 🤷

Tuesday, 23 May

We had a semi-normal workday, then left in the evening. It was a pretty easy flight to Nice out of AMS, and the security was really quick and efficient.

flight into Nice with beautiful clouds

We got some sandwiches at a stand in the airport, which were honestly pretty terrible.

…So after the flight got down in Nice, Katherine and I were pretty hungry already! We got checked in to our hotel & got on our feet to fetch some pizza.

Pizza #1

Da ANDREA - Cucina Italiana

We found a local place in the northern part of the main strip of Nice. It was basically the best place we could find that was close to the hotel, so we picked that one.

Well, it ended up being our favorite pizza of the trip.

See it in our pizza rankings page, coming soon!

Wednesday, 24 May

Started the morning with some “chimney cakes” for a late breakfast. They seemed like they were trying to be fancy pancake things? Either way, it was soooo sugary. Probably too sugary.

I ended up staying in the hotel for part of the day, due to feeling a bit unwell, but ended up rallying by the afternoon! Katherine and I went out into the town.

Hike/walk at the park

Parc de la Colline du Chateau

We had a beautiful walk through the park here. I hesitate to call it a hike since it was mostly paved, but was still really pretty. Nice views of the city of Nice.

Pizza #2

We had an early snack that you could maybe call dinner, but it wasn’t that much food. So we were decently full, but it was only like 5pm. We ended up back at the hotel to rest for a bit, and – of course – ended up sleeping for an hour or two. We were awake by 10:30pm and hungry, BUT most places close by 10. Which leads us to…

Momo pizza

For being just about the only late-night food that we could find, this pizza was surprisingly decent. Not great, but not bad either.

Thursday, 25 May

Error #2 of the trip – we found out at ~midnight that our upcoming bus trip to Marseille was scheduled for 03:30. Not 15:30 aka 3:30pm, but 03:30 in the morning. Oof. Had to change that one to 5pm instead because we were NOT gonna take a bus that early!

Got some decent sleep & then started the day with the classic french fav, some REALLY good crepes.

We spent the afternoon checking out old-town Nice!

Old Nice was a really beautiful area, with narrow streets and lots of shops and restarants. Kinda touristy, but not so much that it was annoying!

The awesome book shop

We have a goal to find a city-specific poster in each place we visit. We first found a poster store in the old part of Nice – they had a few with neat designs, but it was some sort of chain-store with a bunch of locations, and they sold posters for many cities other than Nice here as well… not special…

So Katherine found this other local bookstore place, which ended up being suuuper cool! The owner/librarian had a ton of knowledge about local Mediterranean culture & just France in general. He was so friendly, and got us a really great 60s-era tourist poster print.
